The History of the Saxophone
The saxophone was invented by a Belgian manufacturer, Adolphe Sax and exhibited to the world for the first time at the 1841
Brussels exhibition. In 1840, Sax decided to construct an instrument that would fulfill the middle range sound of a military
band. The sound that he was seeking would be between the woodwind tone of the clarinet, and brass sound of the trumpet. He
moved to Paris in 1842, and completed his work in 1845. The created instrument he named the "saxophone".
The History of the Clarinet
The clarinet was invented around 1690 by Johann Christoph Denner of Nuremburg. This single-reeded,
cyclindrical-tubed woodwind instrument evolved from the first true single reed instrument called the chalumeau.
With the help of his son, Denner improved the chalumeau by increasing the instruments range by two octaves and by
adding two keys. The Boehm flute key system was added to the clarinet in 1843 by Klose and Buffet. The clarinet
was first used in a symphony by the composer, Motzart.
